President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appears to have announced contenders for the next leader of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as his tenure comes to an end.
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the Minister of Trade and Industries, and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister of Agriculture, have reportedly expressed interest in being the ruling party’s flagbearer.
Both men are members of the President’s delegation that is visiting the Ashanti Region.
On the first day of the four-day journey, President Akufo-Addo made a major statement at the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene.
“Nana, please allow me to meet my team,” he said. “This is your grandson, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, my Agriculture Minister who is running for President.”
Mr Kyerematen, when introduced by the President, sat next to the Agriculture Minister.
“Nana, here is Alan Kyeremanten, a very workaholic minister who has been battling for my seat for a very long time,” he chuckled among the din of the gathering gathered at Manhyia.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is one of the front-runners.
